Capsicums, or hot red chili peppers, have come into their own recently, both as a culinary spice and as a medical remedy. Pepper spray or OC (oleoresin capsicum), is a derivative of hot peppers and is the most popular defensive spray agent. It is not an irritant like CS, but an inflammatory agent. Contact with mucous membranes (eyes, nose, throat and lungs), will cause immediate dilation of the capillaries of the eyes resulting in temporary blindness and temporary inflammation of the breathing tube tissues, making it seem difficult for some to take a breath. These symptoms will last from 10 minutes to 45 minutes, depending on the severity of the spray. Most importantly, there are no known harmful side effects from the OC. |
